Cinco de Mayo Is Nacho Excuse to Drink and Drive

Fairfax County, VA – As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo today, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) urges everyone to prioritize safety and make responsible choices. While it’s a time for celebration, it’s also essential to ensure that our roads remain safe for everyone.

Increased Enforcement

Our officers will be out in greater numbers throughout the county on Cinco de Mayo conducting increased DUI enforcement. Officers will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other dangerous behaviors behind the wheel. If you choose to drive under the influence, you will be stopped. This proactive approach is part of our commitment to keeping Fairfax County roads safe for everyone.

Free Safe Rides with WRAP’s SoberRide Program

To support our community in making safe choices, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) offers its SoberRide initiative. This program provides free Lyft rides to prevent drunk driving. For Cinco de Mayo, the service is available from 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5, until 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6.

Tips for Celebrating Safely

  • Plan Ahead: Decide on your transportation method before heading out.
  • Designate a Sober Driver: If you’re attending events with friends, choose someone to remain alcohol-free and drive.
  • Use Public Transportation or Ride-Sharing: Consider options like buses, trains, or ride-sharing services to get home safely.
  • Stay Overnight: If you’re far from home, think about staying overnight at a friend’s place or nearby accommodation.
  • Be a Responsible Host: If you’re hosting a gathering, ensure guests have safe transportation options and discourage excessive drinking.

Let’s work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable Cinco de Mayo for all. Your choices make a difference.
