FCPD Hosts Autism Training for First Responders During Autism Acceptance Month
Fairfax County, VA- This April, in recognition of Autism Acceptance Month, the Fairfax County Police Department partnered with Blue Bridge Autism Training to host Understanding Autism: A Guide for First Responders. The training was led by Captain (Ret.) Gerald Turning—a 25-year law enforcement veteran and a proud Autism Dad.

Why It Matters
First responders often encounter individuals on the autism spectrum in high-pressure situations. Without the right tools, these encounters can become challenging. This training provided officers with practical strategies to better identify and support autistic individuals, focusing on:
- Communication techniques,
- Recognizing signs of autism,
- De-escalation tactics,
- Handling sensory sensitivities,
- Search strategies for missing persons,
- Encouraging cooperation and compliance.
A “Train-the-Trainer” session was also held to help expand the program’s reach across the department.
Real-World Preparedness
This free training was open to both sworn and professional staff, reinforcing the department’s goal of preparing all staff to respond calmly and effectively when every second counts. Programs like this highlight the value of continued learning and community-focused policing.
