6 years for robber who put knife to victims’ throats in River North
Jerry Mufid (Chicago Police Department)

A South Side man who allegedly robbed and placed a knife to the throats of two people in River North last January received a six-year sentence yesterday.

At about 4:45 p.m. on January 13, 2024, a 27-year-old man reported to police that an assailant approached him from behind and held a knife to his throat in the 300 block of North LaSalle Street. The robber demanded his property, fleeing with a phone, wallet, and backpack containing a laptop and a Canada Goose jacket.

Police tracked the victim’s phone and located the stolen items behind a Chicago Fire Department station at Dearborn and Hubbard streets, but the robber was not there.

Shortly thereafter, a 32-year-old man called 911, reporting that someone had held a knife to his throat and robbed him while threatening to kill him near State and Grand, not far from the fire station.

Officers staked out the area where the first victim’s property was found, suspecting the robber might return. They detained Jerry Mufid, also known as Jerry Mufarreh, when he appeared behind the fire station moments later.

Mufid, 21, pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of armed robbery before Judge Michael Hood and received concurrent six-year sentences.

Additionally, Mufid pleaded guilty last month to an unrelated identity theft case, where he was accused of using another man’s credit card at an outlet mall in Rosemont. He received a one-year sentence for that case.
