Montgomery County Police Caution Against Unlicensed Contractors and Distraction Theft Scams

Gaithersburg, MD - As warmer weather returns, the Montgomery County Department of Police is reminding homeowners to stay alert and take precautions when approached by individuals offering home improvement or yardwork services—particularly those who go door-to-door.
Each year, MCPD receives reports about criminal transient groups who offer services such as lawn care, driveway paving, or roof repair. While some may appear professional, many are unlicensed, perform substandard work, or leave without completing the job. In some cases, individuals take payment up front and never return.
